Unnerved by another wave of deadly pre-election attacks by Taliban insurgents including a rocket assault aimed at the presidential palace, the Afghan government on Tuesday ordered unusual restrictions on all news organizations, banning them from reporting suicide bombings and other violence during the Thursday vote.
For my piece today, I jumped onto a conference call with NATO generals who talked in (sadly insufficient) detail about security planning in advance of the election. I didn’t realize it would be the last of its kind. Will the #afghanelection Twitter hashtag users on the ground in Afghanistan now be a sad, ironic inversion of the Iranian election protesters? (Not comparing the two situations, just making a point about restrictions in terms of access.) I could use my BlackBerry in Kabul, after all, but not out in the east…
