Ben Smith has the not-so-shocking newsthat FreedomWorks, the chief organizer of a large September 12 anti-tax, anti-spending “march on Washington,” has been charging other conservative groups to sponsor, drop lit, and speak at the event. The new minimum donation: $10,000. Writes Smith’s source:
“Their ‘organizing’ is tending to dominate and overformalize what would’ve otherwise been a more ‘freelance’ protest,” wrote the conservative, who also complained of FreedomWorks’ move to “own” the entire event by controlling access both to workshops and to the march itself.
It’s not that surprising because big events, big conferences, often do this. It’s moderately embarrassing for the event’s organizers because it takes a little green off of the grassroots. But not too much.
