A new Rasmussen Reports poll on the 2010 Republican primary for Florida’s U.S. Senate seat finds Gov. Charlie Crist (R-Fla.) leading former state House Speaker Marco Rubio among likely GOP primary voters by a margin of 53 percent to 31 percent. Eric Kleefeld readsthis as a failure of Rubio’s attempt to “capitalize on Crist’s support for the stimulus, in order to mobilize conservatives against the moderate governor.” I’m not so sure: According to Pollster.com, which has been tracking the race, Rubio has been steadily gaining steam.

Rubio has failed to chip away at Crist’s overall level of support; in his primary run in Pennsylvania, Rep. Joe Sestak (D-Pa.) has donea better job of chipping awayat Sen. Arlen Specter (D-Pa.). But Rubio is staying in contention despite having one-tenth of Crist’s money and little institutional support.
