Keying off what Spencer wrote, those are sometelling numbersin the Washington Post poll of attitudes about the war in Afghanistan.
Republicans (70 percent say it is worth fighting) and conservatives (58 percent) remain the war’s strongest backers, and the issue provides a rare point of GOP support for Obama’s policies. A narrow majority of conservatives approve of Obama’s handling of the war (52 percent), as do more than four in 10 Republicans (43 percent).
This isn’t surprising. Five months ago, at the launch of the Foreign Policy Initiative, prominent neoconservatives such as Bill Kristol and Fred Kagan warned fellow hawks that support for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan might slip, and that they needed to be there to keep making the case. “It was a gutsy and correct decision,” said Kagan of Obama’s move to send more troops to Afghanistan, so “he will be counting on some significant amount of support from his political opponents.” Matt Duss has more here.
The irony is that the neoconservative with the best foothold in the mainstream media, Kristol, is one of the key conservative opponents of and strategists against Democratic health care plans. Can he play both of these roles at the same time?
