It touches all the bases, portraying Whitman as an out-of-touch elitist who hobnobs not just with a man who called Republicans “assholes,” but with Jimmy Carter.

Whitman didn’t say she had one dinner with him; she said “got to know him very well,” pronounced herself a “huge fan,” then wondered whether Jones would “put someone in charge of what he’s doing here in Oakland.” Four months ago, Whitman wanted reporters to know that she was friendly with an environmental activist who would be working for Obama. Now, Jones is a guy she met at dinner.
