The very unamused people at the Project on Government Oversight, which broke the story of ArmorGroup’s out-of-control security guards at the U.S. embassy in Kabul, have been trying to get some answers from the State Department about how it is that years’ worth of complaints from inside the department and from ArmorGroup employees that the group was running wild could have been ignored. And they’ve gotten a response!
“The Bureau of Public Affairs is in receipt of your message. We encourage you to visit our website at http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/dpb/2009/sept/128554.htmfor the September 1 Daily Briefing transcript regarding this issue.”
How familiar. I myself have been stonewalled for weeks over answers to questions I’ve put to the department about security contractors, which is why my pieces on State’s relationship with them have included lines like“The Washington Independent will print that explanation when the agency provides it.” And I’m waiting still.
Danielle Brian, POGO’s executive director, will testify on Monday to the congressionally createdcommission on wartime contracting. Maybe State will have a response to that.
