Former Gov. Michael Dukakis (D-Mass.) has been dodging questionson whether he was likely to get, or likely to accept, an interim appointment to the Massachusetts U.S. Senate seat left vacant by the late Ted Kennedy. It’s an intriguing idea for political junkies. The runner-up for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination, Jesse Jackson, actually served six years as a Washington, D.C. “shadow senator,” when it looked likely that Democrats might grant statehood for the capital zone.
