Aaron Blake reportsthat former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.), now a conservative radio host, is backing Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman in a special election to replace a Republican congressman in New York’s 23rd district.
Hoffman has become something of a conservative cause celebre. After the local GOP nominated a liberal Republican assemblywoman for the special election, Ken Tomlinson penned an article about Hoffmanarguing that he, like one-term Sen. Jim Buckley (R-N.Y.), could beat the establishment and take the seat. Hoffman would join the GOP caucus if elected; the danger for Republicans is that he splits the vote and allows Democratic candidate Bill Owens to win. Even though Owens is considerably to the right of the average Democrat, that would be a boost to the White House.
