Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) has been a long-time supporterof creating a government-backed health insurance planto compete against private companies. Much to the consternation of liberals, though, the bill working its way through the committee doesn’t include that option because Baucus thinks it won’t get the votes to pass the upper chamber. Today, several liberal groups — Progressive Change Committee and Democracy for America — launched a new $50,000 ad campaign designed to force a change of heart in the Montana Democrat. From CNN:
In a new 60 second commercial that begins running Tuesday in Baucus’ home state and in Washington, D.C., Montana farmer Bing Perrine urges Baucus to support a public option — something the senator has ruled out in a bid to gain bipartisan support for the measure. Perrine said that he faces more than $100,000 in medical bills because of heart problems.
We’ll know soon enough how well the pressure works. The Finance Committee will reconvene this week to continue their mark up of the Baucus bill, with Sens. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) and Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) planning to force votes Tuesday on their public plan amendments.
