Something I couldn’t fit into my piece yesterday: Ivan Oelrich, the acting president of the Federation for American Scientists, weighs in on what President Obama meant when he said the “configuration” of Iran’s hidden Qom nuclear facility made it incompatible with a peaceful nuclear power program. David Albright of the Institute for Science and International Security told me the statement was ambiguous to him. Oelrich:
“„I believe that “configuration” probably refers to the remote location, poor access, and that [the Qom facility] is in a tunnel. So that makes it look suspicious. It is every day getting harder to give the Iranians the benefit of the doubt but I suppose with the constant speculation about an Israeli (or even American) air attack, one might justify putting even a commercial facility underground. So they might argue that even the tunnel placement does not it is military.
