ST. PAUL, Minn. — Women’s issues may not be high on the list of Sen. John McCain’s priorities, as we saw this week when he squirmed as a reporter askedabout statementsmade by campaign adviser Carly Fiorina, about the unfairness of insurance companies that cover Viagra but not birth control. The episode — which took place aboard his ironically named Straight Talk Express bus — was captured on video. Naturally, it has since received a lot of play on cable news networks.
Nonetheless, McCain is scheduled to make a stop this morning in Hudson, Wis., to host a town hall meeting focusing on women and the issues important to them. Though it was initially reportedthat the meeting would be open to women only, a McCain adviser yesterday said it would be open to men. Fiorina — McCain’s most senior woman adviser — was seen getting off the McCain campaign plane yesterday in Minneapolis, and is expected to appear at the meeting.
The decision to focus on women’s issues indicates the campaign hasn’t yet given up its efforts to reach out to the women supporters of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. Yesterday, during a town hall meeting in Detroit, McCain made sure to praise Clinton when asked a question by a woman who described herself as a life-long Democrat, but said she had "lost all respect" for Obama. A recent Gallup pollhas revealed that Obama opened up a sizable lead over McCain among women, after Clinton bowed out of the race. Now that Clinton is actively stumpingfor Obama — and urging her supporters not to vote for McCain — the presumed GOP nominee will probably need to work a lot harder if he wants to win those votes in November.
