Yesterday in Michigan, John McCain remindedRepublicans gathered for a town hall chat why he thinks Sarah Palin, his VP pick, is qualified in the foreign policy department: “She’s commander of the Alaskan National Guard,” McCain said.
But GOP Sen. Chuck Hagel (Neb.), a Vietnam veteran and member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, disagrees. From today’s Omaha World Herald:
“She doesn’t have any foreign policy credentials,” Hagel said in an interview. “You get a passport for the first time in your life last year? I mean, I don’t know what you can say. You can’t say anything.”
Hagel also told the World Herald that Alaska’s proximity to Russia is no qualification:
“I think they ought to be just honest about it and stop the nonsense about, ‘I look out my window and I see Russia and so therefore I know something about Russia,’” he said. “That kind of thing is insulting to the American people.”
Sure, but if eight years of the Bush administration prove anything at all, it’s that the American people have a crazy endurance for insult.
