Ben Szobody’s storyon a brittle town hall meeting between Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and some libertarian constituents is a must-read:
The 75-minute forum filled several sections of Furman University’s Timmons Arena and attracted demonstrators, critics with handheld cameras, shouts of “traitor” and “Sotomayor” – and a smattering of supporters. … One man told Graham he had “betrayed” conservatism and made a “pact with the devil” by working with Democrats, and asked when Graham would switch parties.
There’s a lot of video of the event. One clip, after the jump, has a heckler yelling “You and Obama are guilty of treason! Article I, Section 9! You’re a traitor, Lindsey Graham! You betrayed this nation!” But what does it mean?
On the surface, not much. Graham loves to tangle with the elements of the GOP base that he considers extreme — he has gone out of his way to wrestle with Ron Paul supporters countless times over the past two years. But what does it say about two coming Democratic priorities — climate change legislation and immigration reform? Are both of those issues going to test the unity of the conservative movement and the GOP, which has been strengthened by opposition to health care reform?
