It’s been a bad week for the markets and Sen. John McCain. Now, after several days of attacks on McCain’s economic policies and overall competence, the Obama campaign is launching personal attacks against McCain’s personal wealth — a salvo that will please partisans who worry Obama was not hitting “hard enough.”
Several of McCain’s top aides have lobbied for Fannie Mae, but that didn’t stop McCain from attacking Obama for Fannie ties to Frank Raines. Beyond the glaring hypocrisy, it turns out that McCain’s charges were false, as the Washington Postreported, drawing this counterattackfrom the Obama camp:
This is another flat-out lie from a dishonorable campaign that is increasingly incapable of telling the truth. Frank Raines has never advised Senator Obama about anything — ever.
And by the way, someone whose campaign manager and top adviser worked and lobbied for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac shouldn’t be throwing stones from his seven glass houses. (emphasis added)
For the record, Newsweek estimated McCain has seven houses, Politicoreported eight, and McCain, well, he couldn’t remember. Obama aides are dredging up that gaffeto present McCain as not only incompetent, dishonest and wrong on the market crisis, but also out of touch because of his vast personal fortune.
