Tim Pawlenty, the Republican governor of Minnesota, today became the second possible 2012 presidential contenderto endorse the Conservative Party’s candidate in the NY-23 special election. He gave the statement to RedState, a site that’s been a powerful driving force in this election — Erick Erickson also had the first news of former Majority Leader Dick Armey’s endorsement.
We cannot send more politicians to Washington who wear the Republican jersey on the campaign trail, but then vote like Democrats in Congress on issues like card check and taxes. After reviewing the candidates’ positions, I’m endorsing Doug Hoffman in New York’s special election. Doug understands the federal government needs to quit spending so much, will vote against tax increases, and protect key values like the right to vote in private in union elections.
As a possible 2012 presidential candidate, Pawlenty is taken far more seriously by the political reporting class than former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin; this move gives him a definite short-term boost over Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, and other contenders. Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.), often touted as a dark horse candidate, has been silent so far — a likely function of his leadership position in the House.
