At a luncheon at the Heritage Foundation today, Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) said that the Tea Party movement could help Republicans from moving too far to the left.
“I’m real supportive of the idea that the Tea Party movement could join in with the Republican Party and keep it clean,” said Inhofe. “John McCain, for example, is one of those who wants to move us with the Big Tent Theory. Every time we do that we lose, by expanding and becoming more moderate. That’s where the Tea Party movement can come in, and stop us from doing that. I say that because there are a lot of Republican primaries around the country, and Republicans will have to come around and look real carefully about where they stand.”
Inhofe posed this scenario as an alternative to one where a Tea Party candidate could play a “Ross Perot role” and run in 2012, splitting the anti-Obama vote.
