Republicans in the Senate are trying to hold the Defense appropriations bill hostage to their efforts to kill the health care bill. A filibuster has already failed. But passageisn’t assured. So that’s when Robert Gates clears his throat.
A pillar of the Republican foreign policy establishment for a generation, President Obama’s defense secretary just now released this joint statement with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
“„We strongly urge Senate passage of the Defense Appropriations Bill today, prior to expiration of the current continuing resolution. Passage today will provide important support for our foreign policy and national security priorities and ensure continuity of funding for our troops in combat and for all of the Department of Defense.
Gates is not a weakling or a dirty hippie. Neither is Clinton. But they most certainly are sick of domestic politics gamesmanship at a time of war.
Update: This post initially misidentified Clinton as Adm. Michael Mullen, which is surely a first for either individual. My apologies. I get so many joint releases from Gates and Mullen that my synapses misfired.
