Following news that world leaders had reached a climate deal, President Obama just held a press conference in Copenhagen, calling the agreement “an important milestone” and laying out the framework that will guide the steps toward a binding climate treaty. The deal centered on “transparency, mitigation and finance,” he said. “We worked to establish a consensus around these three points.” The accord followed a meeting with leaders from China, Brazil, South Africa and India, he said.
But Obama stressed that this agreement is merely “the beginning” of the process. “This progress did not come easily, and we know that this progress alone is not enough,” he admitted. “We’ve come a long way, but we have much further to go.” The deal is not legally binding, but rather “will allow each country to show to the world what they are doing.”
Obama also announced that “because of weather constraints in Washington,” he will be leaving before the final agreement is concluded.
