Looking back on some June commentsfrom Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), who recently forcedthe public option out of the Senate’s health care reform bill, his reasons for opposing the plan are striking. Not because he said at the time that a government-backed insurance plan would be too costly (he’s said that all along). And not because he thinks that private insurance companies offer plenty of competition and choice for consumers (he does, after all, represent the insurance industry hub of Connecticut). What sticks out is reason No. 3, which is this:
“And probably the most important, the votes are not there for a public health plan, government-run option. And this can stand in the way of a historic achievement for President Obama and Congress and the American people, which is really to establish a universal access to quality, affordable health care plan in America.”
He didn’t mention that the votes weren’t there because he himself refused to vote for it.
