The governor of Minnesota, answering a barrage of questions about Sarah Palin from Newsweek, has a politically astute answerto whether Palin has enough experience for the White House.
She is easily as qualified as Barack Obama. I would argue she’s more qualified in terms of leadership, experience, management, and supervision—actually running something. She was a mayor, head of an energy commission, and governor.
It’s a great answer because it pivots the attack to Obama. It’s flawed, possibly, because this was the argument that convinced almost nobody during the 2008 campaign — no one would seriously argue, if pressed that governing Wasilla, Alaska, or serving a partial term on an energy commission are grueling tests of executive skills. Obama’s 1992 stint at Project Vote certainly comes off well in comparison. But then, that’s the other part of the answer — if Pawlenty runs against Palin in 2012, it’s his eight years as governor of a swing state versus a governor whose term ended early and whose resume has to be padded to sound impressive.
