Coburn: Debt, Unemployment Trends Are Fault of Congress, Not Obama « The Washington Independent

Media Matters has a good catch today, findingconservative Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) placing the blame for the nation’s deficit spending and employment woes squarely on the shoulders of Congress. From a Saturday speech on the Senate floor:
“„On January 1st, 2009, the national debt was $10.6 trillion. It now stands at $12.1 trillion. That’s not President Obama’s fault, so don’t confuse this with a partisan attack. My attack is on the Senate, and on the Congress. [...]
“„In January 2009, the unemployment rate was 7.6%, today it’s 10%. That’s not President Obama’s fault either. That’s our fault, it the members’ of Congress fault.
As Media Matters rightly points out, that refrain won’t earn Coburn any fans among House Republicans, who have arguedall year that the rising unemployment rate is a product of Obama policies — an argument that’s only going to get louder as the 2010 elections get closer.
