In 2008, one of the worst years to run as a Republican candidate for Congress, Lt. Col. Allen West (Ret.) ran against freshman Rep. Ronald Klein (D-Fla.) in the wealthy, evenly divided Gold Coast. Outspent five to one, West lost by only 10 points, running close to even with the McCain-Palin ticket. Since announcing his 2010 rematch, West — who was discharged from the army after firing his weapon next to a prisoner’s head in Iraq — has quickly ramped up his profile, appearing on Fox News and talk radio to make an aggressive case against liberalism. He was the first Republican candidate, for example, who called the Fort Hood massacre an “act of terrorism.” This year, West told TWI that his election, which would give the GOP its first African-American member of Congress since 2003, was a liberal’s “worst nightmare.”
