The Rasmussen Reports surveyon the Massachusetts special Senate election wasn’t far off from what my Democratic source guessed it would be: Democratic candidate Martha Coakley is up by nine points, 50-41, over Republican candidate Scott Brown. (My source guessedit would be a 10-point race.)
The poll’s internalsshow just how little room Brown has to maneuver. The message being sent to the conservative base, and to Massachusetts independents, is that a vote for Brown is a vote to kill health care reform. Fifty-three percent of voters favor “the health care reform plan proposed by President Obama and the congressional Democrats,” while 45 percent don’t. President Obama’s approval rating is 57 percent. Massachusetts simply isn’t the right place for a pure backlash campaign against the Democrats — it’s a bit of Republican bad luck that the race isn’t being held in Ohio or Virginia.
