The last Republican to hold a U.S. Senate seat in Massachusetts was Edward W. Brooke, who lost to Democrat Paul E. Tsongas in the 1978 election. Brooke was the first African-American senator to be elected since Reconstruction, winning in 1966 over Democrat Endicott Peabody. He received the Congressional Gold Medal last October for his groundbreaking achievement.
Brooke held a progressive ideology, something that was more common for members of the Republican Party in those days. But Brooke’s liberal beliefs often stretched well beyond those of his colleagues. He was the first Republican to call for President Richard Nixon’s resignation, and he supported “low-income housing, increasing the minimum wage and furthering mass transit,” according to The Washington Post. He backed civil rights and reproductive rights for women, and opposed school segregation.
Brooke was the last African-American Republicanin the Senate.
