Last week I had the opportunity to visit the market in Zormat, a district center in the southwest part of Afghanistan’s Paktia Province. The market, which takes about 10 minutes to walk through, is pretty much the center of Zormat’s economic activity. And from what I saw, that center isn’t holding: after selling produce to members of the 1-61 Cavalry, vendors talked openly about their fear — fear of both the Taliban and the ANP, the acronym for the Afghan National Police. Here’s what I found.
