Just released from the Senate Armed Services Committee:
This afternoon, June 26, 2008, the committee was able to establish a quorum and voted, by voice vote, to favorably report out the nomination of General David H. Petraeus, USA to be general and Commander, US Central Command; LTG Raymond T. Odierno, USA to be general and Commander, Multi-National Force-Iraq; as well as 2,121 pending military nominations in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. All nominations were immediately reported to the floor following the committee’s action.
There was never any doubt that Petraeus and Odierno would be confirmed. But it would be nice if, you know, Odierno had to explain a strategyfor the next year in Iraq. As for Petraeus, his move to Central Command is both a real challenge and a potential opportunity for a President Obama, as I explain in this piecethat the right beat me up for for but I stand behind entirely.
