Conyers vs. Yoo. Could the president order a suspect’s child be tortured, since Yoo was quoted as saying, “It depends on why the president feels the need to do that”? Yoo says he was quoted out of context. Conyers asks what couldn’tthe president order?
Yoo: “My thinking right now, this moment, Mr. Chairman, is that first, the question you’re posing–” Conyers yells: WHAT IS THE ANSWER? “You’re wasting my time. Hold it! Could the president order a suspect buried alive?”
Yoo: “I’ve never given the advice that the president could order someone buried alive… my view right now, no American president would ever order that or feel it necessary to order that.” So the legal question remains unanswered.
Conyers asks Addington if there was ever a Principles’ Meeting to discuss specific torture methods. “I don’t know of any such meeting, I wasn’t at one… Don’t know of any meeting that fits the description you’ve given.” He and Conyers trade raised voices over the meaning of the “unitary executive” theory of the presidency, with each implying that the other is mischaracterizing each others’ opinions. “I know exactlywhat I mean by it,” Addington growls. And then doesn’t really explain.
