Making a special guest appearance, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) — who says “I’ve come here to give you the benefit of the doubt” and fools no one — puts on the monitor a clip of Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC) at last week’s Senate Armed Services Committee hearing saying that Addington and Yoo’s legal guidance was “some of the most irresponsible and shortsighted legal analysis ever provided to our military and intelligence communities.” Addington looks even less pleased than he did five minutes ago.
Yoo and Addington have to be sworn in. Welcome to the future: perjury investigations, endless YouTube clips.
Addington speaks! References that the “hallways are full of protesters” and says Conyers has “a long history of being respectful.” Adds “everyone on this committee, and certainly these three witnesses, want to defend this country, that’s not a partisan issue.” Well, except for the FISA Court, right, man? And that’s it for his opening statement. Translated: Eff you, let’s get this over with.
Yoo, , thanks the committee for “this opportunity” to testify. TWI managing editor Laura McGann breaks out in peals of laughter. Yoo says it’s been “almost seven years” since the events he’ll be testifying on under oath, so clearly he fears a perjury inquiry later on. “We in the Justice Dept. did the best we could… I don’t think anyone in the department would make any claim of infallibility… I openly accept that reasonable people can differ in good faith. … Policy decisions were made in the White House [or] the Dept. of Defense.” Translated: Please don’t lead to my disbarment or imprisonment! Do you know what they do to guys like me in jail?
*Update: * Yoo wasn’t subpoenaed. I regret the error.
