Speakingoftorture, in about ten minutes, a House Judiciary subcommittee is scheduled to hear from two key enablers of torture: David Addington, chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney; and John Yoo, a Berkeley Law School professor formerly of the Justice Dept.’s Office of Legal Counsel. These two men were instrumental in transforming torture from a barbaric practice better suited to the KGB and Al Qaeda into official U.S. policies of extraordinary rendition, indefinite detention and “enhanced interrogation.” Not only has neither man testified before Congress since at least the dawn of the Bush administration, both are appearing before the subcommittee, chaired by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), only because they’ve been served with subpoenas.
Or maybe they won’t! Perhaps Addington, Yoo, or both will defy the subpoenas and dare the House to do something about it! After all, both argue that during wartime, the president has “plenary” powers to do whatever, so whatever. We’ll see. In any case, I’ll be liveblogging.
