There is so much stuff in AEY’s $300 million arms contract for the oversight committee to wade through that we just got to yesterday’s big revelation: that the U.S. Ambassador to Albania, John L. Withers, worked with the Albanian Defense Ministry to destroy the labeling of Chinese-made weapons about to go to Afghanistan. Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Ia.) just brought it up to Stephen Moll, in charge of the State Dept. watch list of rogue contractors.
Moll claimed he didn’t know anything about the charges, but had “read press accounts.” Frustrated, and not really going anywhere with his questioning, Braley asked Moll to at least confirm that this is “bad.” Moll said he supposed it could be.
The hearing is now back to looking at why AEY was given the contract in the first place, despite past shenanigans of Diveroli. These include telling a contracting officer that an
order was delayed because a hurricane destroyed his Miami office. Not only did the hurricane not destroy his office, but there wasn’t a hurricane.
