Today, the Labor Department announcedthat the unemployment rate fell in 34 states from March to April, did not change in 10 states and rose in six. That falling unemployment rate in 34 states was offset by job losses and new entrants to the labor market in bigger states. Nationally, unemployment rose from 9.7 to 9.9 percent, as the number of entrants to the job market outpaced the number of new positions.
The Department also released year-on-year numbers. After the jump, you’ll find a chart of the 10 states that added the most jobs in the past year, and the 10 that lost the greatest number. States with already-poor employment figures tended to lose the most jobs, with Nevada being the most outsized example.
