That’s essentially what the Alabama Democrat kept asking Scott McClellan at today’s never-ending House Judiciary Committee hearing. "Do you believe that he’s capable of lying in order to protect himself?" Davis asked McClellan about Rove. "Well, based on my own experience…in my situation…yes," McClellan responded.
Davis then pressed McClellan on whether Rove was capable of getting White House officials to lie about the firing of the U.S. attorney’s. McClellan wouldn’t answer saying he has no personal knowledge of the U.S. attorneys case.
Davis also asked if Rove would be capable of influencing a prosecution, in general.
Davis’s line of questioning was interesting because he and judiciary committee Chairman John Conyers (D-Mi.) are trying to determine if Rove played a role in the prosecution of former Democratic Alabama Gov. Don Seigelman. They’ve been negotiating with Rove’s lawyers about whether or not he would testify as part of the investigation.
So the McClellan hearing should be a logical springboard for reeling in Rove. But, throughout the hearing, McClellan has not been veering from his main talking point: "it’s in the book- read my book."
