Michael Bromwich — who was appointed by the Obama administration to reform the former Minerals Management Service (MMS), the agency that was responsible for regulating oil drilling in the run-up to the BP oil spill — has scheduled a series of hearings on drilling safety during the next two months, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The hearings will give the administration an opportunity to blast BP for its safety record and delve into options for improving safety standards. The announcement comes as Congress is holding a marathon series of hearings on the spill.
The Journal reportedyesterday that Bromwich announced the hearings at day two of a meeting in New Orleans of the White House’s national oil spill commission. Bromwich is the head of the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Management, which was formed after the Gulf oil spill brought about intense criticism of the often cozy relationship between MMS and the oil industry.
According to the Journal, Bromwich told the commission:
“Clearly the industry—and they’ve acknowledged as such before Congress and the Department of Interior—they don’t have a fix on what the most effective containment strategies for dealing with oil spills are.”
