Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) defended his decision to move a significantly scaled-back energy bill before the August recess at the Capitol today. Reid said the scaled-back bill would focuson an oil spill response bill and other energy measures.
“This is not the only legislation we’re going to do. This is what we can do now,” Reid told reporters today, adding that he and key lawmakers would continue to work on energy legislation for potential passage later this year. “We know where we are. We know we don’t have the votes.”
Also speaking in the Capitol today, Carol Browner, the White House energy and climate adviser, suggested the Obama administration would use its regulatory authority to deal with climate change and other issues. “We will continue to use our existing tools to address these problems,” she said. Browner said the White House supports Reid’s decision to scale back the bill and would work with him going forward.
