Looks like selling his housepaid off. Colorado Democratic Senate candidate and former Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff has surgedinto a dead heat with appointed Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) with just over a week until the state’s August 10 primary, according to the latest polling numbers.
Romanoff, like Rep. Joe Sestak (D-Pa.) who took on incumbent Sen. Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) in May, is mounting a liberal challenge to the Democratic establishment’s pick — and he’s getting a boost of support from the majority of younger, Hispanic, and “liberal” voters in the state, a Denver Post and 9News survey showed. Also like Sestak, he’s leapt back from a huge deficit — 17 points in Romanoff’s case — and now has the momentum going into the final full week of campaigning.
One of the few things working against Romanoff at this moment is Colorado’s mail-in system of voting, used in most counties, through which about 40 percent of expected voters are estimated to have already cast ballots. Romanoff has to hope that enough supporters are energized by his recent surge to show up at the polls next week in order to swing the election his way.
