In a letter sent to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) today, a coalition of renewable energy industry groups, environmentalists and labor unions called for passage of a renewable energy standard in September.
With a vote on Sen. Reid’s oil spill response bill delayeduntil September at the earliest, interest groups have revived their lobbying campaign to include a renewable energy mandate in the legislation. But Republicans have made it clear, as I reported this morning, that adding energy provisions like an RES to the bill will lead to continued broad Republican opposition.
From the letter:
With the recent decision to delay the energy debate until September, the Senate has another chance to make a clear choice: it can maintain and create hundreds of thousands of good-paying, manufacturing jobs domestically or allow those jobs to move overseas. Failure to act will also cause us to miss an opportunity to increase revenue for America’s farmers and ranchers and local economies. The outcome hinges on whether or not we pass a national Renewable Electricity Standard (RES) this year.
