This morning, Obama signed into law the $600 million border security bill passed by the Senate yesterday. The bill will money to hire 1,000 new Border Patrol agents and purchase unmanned drones to patrol the border. The bill also includes funds directed at maintaining safety for border cities, with $30 million for law enforcement activities targeted at reducing the threat of violence.
Although Republicans called for increased border security measures before they would participate in other immigration reform measures, they have said the bill does not do enoughto improve safety of border states. Immigrants rights groups, on the other hand, argue the bill was unnecessaryand merely an effort to win over Republicans — and voters — who do not believe Democrats are serious about border enforcement.
