Jack Reed asked Dalton about the service JAGs’ concerns that the SERE techniques were illegal and exposed their users to prosecution. Did she make her boss, Gen. Richard Myers, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, aware of that?
“My recollection is the decisionmakers were aware–”
“No,” Reed cut her off, “I’m asking you specifically: did you make him aware.”
“Senator,” Dalton replied, “I don’t recall the specific conversations, but my recollection is that the chairman was aware and I made him aware.”
It appears that Dalton was Haynes’ bagwoman, used to stop the services’ objection to the use of torture. Haynes, she said, told her to “stop the broader-based services’ review” of the interrogation techniques stemming from Beaver’s memo. She does not look very comfortable right now.
