Former Rep. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) is getting some help from his old friends today. The Club for Growth, a conservative anti-tax organization founded by Wall Street investors, announced a new 30-second ad today that will air statewide in Pennsylvania and attack Toomey’s opponent, Rep. Joe Sestak (D-Pa.) as “very liberal.”
Toomey is a former president of the Club for Growth, which is currently ranked number three for campaign spending by interest groups on the Washington Post’s new interactive “Campaign Cash” table. He’s trying hard to cast himself as the moderate in the race, but if his previous record in the House of Representatives is any indication, he’s anything but.
But how conservative is he, you ask? To provide a frame of reference, the vote tracking service DW-Nominate puts himconsiderably further to the right than former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum (R), who was defeated in 2006 by voters who considered his views to be too extreme. It’s a sign either of how far the center has shifted in the last four years, or how well Toomey is hiding his previous voting record from Pennsylvania voters.
