In a statement, Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), who has been one of the leading voices in the Senate against drilling, said offshore drilling is “an inherently dangerous practice.”

This explosion is further proof that offshore drilling is an inherently dangerous practice. It’s time for the United States to adopt a comprehensive energy strategy that moves us away from dirty fuels and towards clean energy sources. As the U.S. Coast Guard responds to this latest incident, we must redouble our efforts to accelerate the push for clean, renewable energy and end our nation’s dependence on oil.
