U.S. and Canadian environmental groups sent a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) today raising concerns about the greenhouse gas emissions involved in extracting Canadian tar sands. The letter comes as the lawmakers are meeting today with Alberta Premier Ed Stelmac during a G8 meeting in Ottawa.
The environmental groups specifically targeted a tar sands oil pipeline from Alberta to Texas proposed by TransCanada. According to the letter, “We are opposed to the building of this pipeline, as it would lock us into decades of consumption of one of the most environmentally destructive forms of oil in the world and would undermine the U.S. transition to a new energy economy.”
