PG&E — the owner of the natural gas pipeline that exploded in San Bruno, Calif., killing at least four people and damaging dozens of homes — has set up a $100 million fund to compensate the victims of the disaster.
And it appears the company has learned some lessons from the Gulf oil spill claims process. The company has promised not to require that victims waive their right to sue for more money if they accept a payment from the fund. That’s not the case in the Gulf, where oil spill victims must sign such a waiver if they accept a final, lump-sum payment for their losses. (Interim emergency payments do not require a waiver.)
According to a press releasefrom PG&E: “Residents are not being asked to waive any potential claims in order to receive these funds.”
Under the fund, residents can receiver $15,000, $25,000 or $50,000, depending on the extent of the damages, the press release says.
