Tomorrow, the House Transportation Committee will hold a hearingon the oil pipeline break that spilled about 1 million gallons of oil into a tributary of the Kalamazoo River in Michigan. The hearing will allow lawmakers to question federal officials about pipeline safety for the first time since the spill.
A note on the committee’s website suggests that the hearing will also focus on the recent natural gas pipeline burst in San Bruno, Calif. According to the note:
Members are advised that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) will be able to answer questions at the hearing related to the September 9, 2010 Enbridge release of crude oil on Line 6A in Romeoville, Illinois, and the deadly September 9, 2010 Pacific Gas & Electric natural gas explosion in San Bruno, California, as well as Federal oversight of gas and hazardous liquid pipeline safety.
For a little light reading, here is the 42-page backgrounderon the Michigan spill. And here is a seriesI wrote on pipeline safety this summer.
Officials from the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Transportation Safety Board and the Department of Transportation are expected to testify at the hearing.
