The feud is officially over! Jerry Brown’s campaign announced today in a press release that Bill Clinton will be joining him and San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom for a series of events on the campaign trail in California on October 15 and 17 in support of their candidacies for governor and lieutenant governor, respectively.
“I am very pleased to have the endorsement of President Clinton, and I look forward to campaigning with him and with Gavin Newsom,” said Jerry Brown. “President Clinton accomplished a lot for California, and we have a ticket that will accomplish a lot for California’s future.”
“„The announcement that the popular former President will hit Northern and Southern California on the campaign trail comes in the same week gubernatorial candidate Brown’s off-the-cuff comments about Clinton’s veracity created headlines — and a distraction for his campaign. The State Attorney General’s public apology to Clintoncame on the heels of an ad by Republican candidate Meg Whitman’s team which highlighted Clinton’s past criticism of Brown as a tax-raiser — comments which Clinton himself has now said were based on false data.
Whitman, for her part, has been making her own headlines. She’s now officially surpassedNew York Mayor Michael Bloomberg in terms of personal campaign spending, making her the biggest self-funded political candidate…in history.
She’s also been taking a bit of heatfor continuing to run her ad featuring Clinton accusing Jerry Brown of raising taxes while governor — even after it’s been shown to be based on false data. When pressed on the issue at an event at the San Fran headquarters of Yelp, Whitman defended her decision, saying, ”The essentials of that ad are absolutely true.”
