Kevin Costner (yes, that Kevin Costner) has proposed a nearly $895 million plan to prevent future oil spills.
Costner, who starred in the 1995 movie Waterworld, is proposing that the Interior Department require new technologies to remove oil from the surface and prevent oil rig blowouts.
Costner, in an interviewwith the New Orleans Times Picayune, said his plan is far superior to a $1 billion proposal put forth by a “consortium” of three major oil companies. He said:
No one has offered up a plan — neither industry nor government — and the plan that was being tossed around at some level by the consortium is something that didn’t deal at all with what everybody in the world knows: seeing oil come to the surface and move its way towards shore. The oil spill response is nonexistent in that billion-dollar plan.
