PG&E, the owner of the natural gas pipeline in San Bruno, Calif., that burst earlier this month killing four people and destroying dozens of homes, released yesterday for the first time maps of the locations of its pipelines.
As I reported last week, PG&E previously did not reveal the location of the pipelines for “security reasons,” a violation of federal pipeline regulations that say local residents must be made aware of the presence of pipelines near their homes.
PG&E also released yesterday a list of the top 100 segments of pipeline owned by the company that are priorities for monitoring or repair because of the potential for them to be damaged. In a statement yesterday, PG&E said, “The segments are placed on the list based on a wide range of criteria, including the potential for third-party damage to the line, the condition of the pipe, its specific design and physical characteristics, its proximity to areas that may be prone to ground movement and its location relative to high density populations or environmentally sensitive areas.”
In a tweet yesterday, PG&E said the San Bruno pipeline was not on the Top 100 list, as it is called. “We were not aware of anything in this area that met the criteria of this list,” the company said.
