At a hearing of the national oil spill commission today, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson addressed concerns about waste disposal from the oil spill.
As I’ve reported, environmental justice groups have criticized the way waste from the spill is being disposed of, noting that much of it is being put in landfills near poor or minority communities. Jackson, responding to a question from the commission, said this is an “issue of concern” with all environmental disasters because many landfills were sited near poor or minority communities decades ago. While acknowledging that these “are not easy issues,” Jackson said she has gone to the Gulf of Mexico twice just to oversee waste disposal issues. She also assured Gulf residents that EPA is taking on its own independent testing of the waste to ensure it isn’t harmful to nearby residents.
