The Federal Emergency Management Agency denied late last week a request by the state of California for disaster aid after the massive natural gas pipeline explosion that killed eight people and destroyed hundreds of homes.

At a hearing on the San Bruno explosion today, San Bruno Mayor Jim Ruane expressed frustration at the decision. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), in response, said she would aid Ruane in any appeal of the decision.
