The Federal Emergency Management Agency denied late last week a request by the state of California for disaster aid after the massive natural gas pipeline explosion that killed eight people and destroyed hundreds of homes.
According to the Associated Press:
FEMA spokesman Brad Carroll said the agency determined that state and local governments and the utility that owns the ruptured pipeline could cover the cost of recovery on their own.
At a hearing on the San Bruno explosion today, San Bruno Mayor Jim Ruane expressed frustration at the decision. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), in response, said she would aid Ruane in any appeal of the decision.
