United Nations climate change talks started today in Tianjin, China. And, right off the bat, the head of the UN negotiations urged China to be open to compromise in negotiations.
According to AFP, Christiana Figueres, head of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, said:
It is absolutely indispensable that China show leadership, accompanied by all other countries, to be flexible in order to be able to reach the compromises that are necessary before Cancun.
You’ll hear a lot of talk about compromise this week, as the six-day talks continue. But expectations are lowthat talks in Tianjin, let alone major talks in Cancun Mexico in December, will produce a meaningful, binding climate treaty.
Still, there’s some low-hanging fruit. For one, many observers hopethat the talks in Tianjin will lay the groundwork to establish a climate fund in Cancun that will help poor countries adapt to the impacts of climate change.
