The construction of the third Olkiluoto nuclear power plant is coming to an almost complete halt.
According to Kauppalehti, Areva has not renewed the employees 'employment contracts, which expire today, and the same situation is reported with the employees' employment contracts, which expire at the end of March.
Usually, contracts are renewed at these times year after year.
Today, about 50 Finnish and French foremen are known to end the construction site. Work is continuing on the finalization of the power plant's façade, the commissioning of diesel, and the maintenance of the plant.
Since the pressurization test at the beginning of February, no other construction work has been carried out.
The third power plant at Olkiluoto was originally scheduled to be completed already in 2009. Areva has not set a new schedule and has not changed its own assessment of the power plant's completion this year.
Ready Maybe? (2018-2020)
Last year, TVO estimated that the power plant would be completed in 2016 at the earliest.
Areva was scheduled to submit an OL3 schedule statement by the beginning of the year, but it has not been included.
According to estimates received by Kauppalehti today, completion may be delayed until 2018 or even 2020.
“Each month that jobs stand means an additional three months on the completion schedule. Experts who are leaving now may not be returned very quickly, ”say sources at the construction site, who do not want to comment on their names.
According to their assessment, the reasons for the stoppage of work are in particular the compensation disputes between Areva and TVO for the delay in completion and the unfinished automation planning.
Areva is demanding compensation of approximately EUR 2.7 billion from TVO. TVO has also stated that it has suffered losses of EUR 1.8 billion due to the delay and is demanding compensation from Areva.
When the cornerstone of OL3 was laid in September 2005, the estimated cost of the project at that time was around € 3.5 billion. Plant supplier Areva estimated in the public more than a year ago that the final price of OL3 could reach up to 8.5 billion euros.
